Traditionally, summer is the time of year for trips to the lake and fun in the sun. For your pets, however, summer is the time of year for fleas and ticks. Fleas and ticks prefer cool, moist places and can often be found at lakes, in tree shrubs, leaves, and in creeks. Make sure to check your animals regularly for fleas and ticks to avoid an infestation, even in the winter. Unbeknownst to most, fleas and ticks can live year round and can still affect your animal, even in the snow. Be aware of your animal’s surroundings and use flea and tick treatment if you suspect your animal may be infested.
In the heat of the summer, it’s important to know your animals’ typical behavior. While it may be fun to take them along on a car ride or to play fetch at the park, your pet may be overheating without even knowing. Watch for signs to know if your pet may have heat exhaustion or possible heat stroke.
